I have a 1995 Chevy Silverado K 3500 dually; 5 sp manual transmission deisel turbo. Unfortunately, even though prior owner put in a power chip (which I think might even be detrimental), this truck cannot handle the trailer load. Trailer is all aluminum and weighs empty about 4300# by my recollection (Cimarron Norstar, 2005 model). Instead it spews deisel clouds all over the trailer and chugs along like it's going to die, especially if it has an incline. What the HECK?? SO-- I am guessing I need a more powerful engine, but since I rarely use the truck to do anything but haul and only expect to put about 8000 miles a year on it, I don not want to strap myself with a huge payment. Could you PLEASE tell me what vehicles I should consider for this task that may be a bit older?? I prefer deisel engines. Would also like to know how best to search for a solid deal AND to sell my truck.

Older Dodge diesels in your year range (mid-90'2) with a 5 speed manual or late nintes with a 6-speed manual best. In those years, the Dodge drive trains are holding up a little better, bodies will be in better shape from Ford and a Ford diesel with a manual can be a good choice as well and there will be more Fords to choose from.

Don't bother with the GM diesels until 2002. The Duramax started in 2001, but as usuall with first years, stay away. The Duramax with the Allison 6 speed auto is one of the best choices for 2006, so now the competition for a diesel pickup truck is close.

Remember that used truck judging is more about an individual truck than a truck brand. Try to find that one owner, that's never been towed with. Use www.autotrader.com as a reference for prices being asked. Get a used diesel checked out by a good mechanic.

Sincerest thanks for reply; certainly helps to pare down choices a little.
Meantime, I don't suppose there is anything I could do to 'pump up' the 95 Chevy I have? I am assuming the engine (size) will never be able to handle the load. Could the power chip that was installed be actually detrimental to the engine's intended function?? I have never assessed the truck's performance with the factory chip vs the power chip (towing could be worse I guess).
