How are trucks classified when they say 1 ton, 5 ton 6 1/2 ton, is it capacity above curb(dry) weight or rear axle capacity or what? For instance I have a 2001 F250SD with 8800# package, fawr 4000# rawr 6048(?)# GVWR 8800# most 250'S are considered/ called 3/4 ton but what is the real deal?

It's an old rating system by what payload was 50 years ago. Trucks are classed, class 1 is 1/2 ton, class 4 is like Ford F450, GM 4500 etc. I have a chart at, http://mrtruck.net/sub1.htm Payload is figured by subtracting curb weight from GVWR. Towing capacity is curb weight of truck subtraced from GCWR.
