I need help in deciding on what pick up I need for heavy goose neck hauling . I just retired and I'm already bored so I want to start doing some contract work hauling what ever I can with a goose neck trailer. All advice will be very appreciated.

Hi Ray .. Congrats on getting to retirement...

The first issue is how heavy of a hauler are you considering?
Since you say pick-up... I'll figure a dually at most or a 3/4 ton at least.
The key figure to watch out for is the hitch weight. Both the dually and the single rear wheel truck will pull about the same trailer. But the hitch weights will be different.

Ray: That wasn't much advice. Need a bit more info to get specific. Like what weight will you be hauling and what truck will you use.

There's a whole bunch of issues when you're going commercial. Even with an ordinary 3/4 T pick-up the commercial aspect changes everything.

By the way... nice avatar you're got..

I'll be doing Hot Shot work and hauling Pipe ,cars, crates what ever I can get to do heavy hauling with a gooseneck trailer. I am looking at a ram 350(dual or single whl) to do the hauling. what is the deal on the hitch weight. I will also be doing long hauling. Sorry about the to quick reply. All your info is welcome

Ray .. If life was simple and fair, you'd have a great time in retirement, hauling around the country. I'd be right behind you with my 24 foot flatbed and dually.

First problem we have is the gov't and lawyers. The gov't will require a CDL for us and then DOT registration. Eventually we'll be stopped by a weigh station or highway trooper. Without the above items, the fines will take all the profit and maybe we'll get 3 squares a day for a while.

If we got into a wreck, The lawyers will take our assets since we don't have commercial common carrier insurance. Too expensive ya know ...

Then the hitch weight... Figure 20% of a GN is on the truck through the hitch. If the trailer and load weighs 15,000 pounds then the truck has to carry 3000 pounds plus its own weight. I think most 3/4 trucks suspensions are about down to the bump stops with this. This is why a dually exists. To carry the weight... Otherwise the single and dual rear wheel trucks are about the same. A single rear wheel 350 truck is just a tarted up 3/4 ton truck in my opinion. It needs the duallys to carry weight.
