Our school buses occasionally develop a stuck turbo boost plate in the turbo pedestal. This is noticable when the engine is cold. It has low power, a loud "jet noise", and black smoke from the exhaust until the engine warms up. Then it takes off like a banshee or like it should actually. One solution is to disconnect the plug on the front side of the turbo pedestal to disable the control. The cost to fix the problem is $210 for a new turbo pedestal as the unit is built as a complete assembly and cannot be repaired or replace seperately. I have been told by several in the industry that disconnecting the unit will lead to premature engine failure. Can anyone explain why this may be so, or if it is actually a possibility. This would make spending the $210 reasonable to avoid this risk. Otherwise, we just need to warm up the engine before leaving the lot to avoid this problem. McWheels
