I live in the UK and very little info is available here,
I have read much about matching a truck to a trailer, but how ?
I want to buy a 35 ft 5th wheel trailer, I have been told locally that I need a pickup such as a ford f250/350 or dodge 2500/3500 or chevvy 2500/3500.
Is it correct that a ford f150 or dodge 1500 or chevvy 1500 is not up to the job ?

I understand how to calculate towing capacities when towing a travel trailer but dont know where to start when talking about 5th wheel trailers.

I ask this because here in the UK the 1/2 ton trucks are a lot more common than the 3/4 or 1 ton trucks

Is there a simple rule ?

Not sure if I will be able to find my way back to this forum to find answers so a direct email would be very much appreciated

My email david@oldvicaragebarnstaple.co.uk

Thanks for any help

David

It's hard to be specific without more info on your truck and trailer. It also depends on if hard cargo or live cargo. Horses with their high center of gravity should be hauled at 10- to 15% less than maximum trailer capacity. Your need to look up your truck and trailers GVWR, combined, axle ratings, etc. Then you need to look at factory towing packages, trailer brake controller, external tranny cooler etc. Generally a 1/2 ton tows 6-8000#, HD 3/4 ton tows 10-12,000#, 1-ton 12-15,000#, more than that and you are looking at class 4-6 trucks.
