We all know to stay away from the 6.0L Ford Diesels.
But what about a used F250 with a V10 engine? Does anyone have any thoughts on that particular engine. I will be hauling horses with this truck. Thanks! |

The V10's are great engines. They just don't have the torque of a diesel, not very good fuel mileage either especially if hauling a heavy load. The main thing to remember is to keep the spark plugs torqued periodically. If you don't, they tend to vibrate loose and sooner or later one will shoot out of it's bore ruining the cylinder head.

Hi, and thank you for your reply. I was able to find a used one locally, and the specs they gave me over the phone are as follows:
2004 F250 Lariat (don't really need all these bells and whistles) V10 43000 miles The owner said that it does have a towing package, and was used for light towing by him. He did also disclose that it was owned by a friend of his before him, and he used it exclusively for towing boats. So, I would imagine that most of the miles was towing (obviously harder milage than just driving right?) They are asking 25000 dollars, but I can only seem to get it to come up in the KBB.com as 22000 dollars for a private party value. 43000 miles on a diesel I would not worry about. But on a gas engine? Also, what is the tow rating for this truck? He said it is the same as a diesel, but really? This message has been edited. Last edited by: ncsuacd, |

Modern gas engines with fuel injection can now have a life of 200,000. If it has a 4.30 axle ratio's, it can be rated similarly to a diesel. But the torque is a low rpm's with the diesel, so they have more reserve power. A gas engine towing at max capacity will be running at much higher rpm.
