I am shopping for a new F250. Supercab XLT LB SRW 4x2. I can't afford a diesel ($9000 Cdn) and I don't think I need a V10. I will be keeping the truck for 8 - 10 years. I will be towing a 5th wheel with a GVWR of 9000 lbs. max. about 20% of the time, mostly in the May - November months, (I live in Canada). I have read that most SD owners consider the 5.4 L engine as being underpowered for the SD. I don't speed when towing, trying to stay within the speed limit of 60 mph.
The Ford at 300 hp @ 365 lbs. of torque, comparing the 6.0 L engine on the new GMC trucks has a 367 hp @ 375 lbs. of torque does this make the GMC a better engine? I have heard that the GM motor has a special feature to allow for better fuel economy by reducing the running engine down to a 4 cylinder motor when the truck is cruising (empty) on the highway. This truck will be my daily vehicle for everyday use. I am retired so it won't be used for a daily commute to work. I am slightly concerned about mileage, but also know that in a truck of this size, my mileage will be poor. I presently have a 01 Supercrew (4.6 and have averaged 16.8 mpg over the past 7 years). So, is it worth my while to buy an F250, or would I be better off with a new 3/4 ton GMC with the bigger engine? For the record, I have priced the 2 trucks on the OEM web sites and they come out at almost the same price, the GMC is cheaper by $50, no big deal. I have also looked at the Toyota Tundra with the 5.7 V8. Its engine figures are impressive, but will it tow a 5th wheel? All I get from the salesman is yes it will tow, but no answer for a 5th. I have received different views from others who won the F250 with the 5.4 engine who say that its a good engine and I shouldn't have any problems. I am concerned that I will be underpowered when I really need the power. Thanks in advance |

Toyota has a good reputation for reliability. But, the Tundra seems to be a 1/2 ton truck. That's why you don't get a sure answer for the GN hitch. It's too light to carry the weight. Engine power is there, the frame isn't.
Both the Ford and GM trucks are good. That's your choice. Research the rear axle ratio. a 4.10 is great for towing but poor on mileage. A 3.73 is better for mileage but hard on the transmission and "get n go" The varible cylinder idea is an interesting approach. I've heard of it being used for several years so we hope the bugs have been worked out. |

Thank you for the quick reply. If I am hearing you correctly, you don't see a problem with the 5.4 L engine. I will be going with the 4.10 axle as it gives me a 5th wheel towing max of 11800 lbs. and I only require 9000 lbs. The GCWR is 18000 lbs. for this truck. I have been told to get the V10 by others who tell me that it is better and more powerful than the V8. They also tell me that the mpg is almost the same as the V10 with the 4.10 axle.
