Every Humvee the military has, has the 6.2L or 6.5L. Generally the 6.5L TD doesn't have a good reputation for hard use or long live. It was supposed to be engineered with Detroit Diesels help before GM sold them. Resale value is not good. I'm hoping someone will tells us about their 6.5L.
H. Kent Sundling, Free Truck'nology reports and other truck mystery's revealed at http://MrTruck.com along with top power, fuel mileage and towing accessories for your truck, SUV and trailer. |

'93 was the first full year of 6.5 TD production Both the automatics and the manuals were very strong units; however, the engines were not nearly as good. Power is acceptable, especially for it's day 12 years ago. Stock was around 430 ft/lbs @ 1800RPM, if I'm not mistaken. Cooling is a major issue that tends to shorten the life span of these engines. Aftermarket upgrades are available. Many of these need major work, if not complete rebuilds, by 150,000 miles, which is far under that of the competitor's diesels and similar to gasoline longevity. Remember that rebuilds are far more costly in diesels than gasoline. Mr. Truck is also correct in that resale is low on these trucks. |
