Hi,

I'm looking at a 2000 GMC Sierra 2500 7.4L. I am trying to figure out the towing capacity and not finding the info I need.

I have a 2H gooseneck that weighs 7,000 empty, so horses, gear, etc will add another 3,000 (?) lbs.

Does this truck have the towing capacity I need?

Thank you!

Hello LMTB ..
Here's a link to a chart for the 2000 7.4 engine.

Depending on the axle ratio and drive train, the max tow weight ranges from 9,500 to 11,900 pounds. What does your truck have?

I don't know what the axle ratio and drive train is. How do I find this out?

The truck is not in my possession so I can see if the seller knows. I know the manual was still in the glove box, would the info be there or on the side of the door?

Thanks for your assistance, Hosspuller!

The best way to find out what options the truck was built with at the factory is the "RPO" codes. (Regular Production Order) A listing of the truck's codes is in the glove box. Ask the seller to give you the codes.

Then go to this site :

http://www.camarosource.ca/php/camaro_info_db/index.php...oding&year=1998&tm=1

To see what the codes mean...

Another question ... for a 2 horse GN, 7000 pounds empty is heavy. Does your trailer have a LQ ? Or are you quoting the GVWR on the trailer's nameplate?

Well, I got what I thought was the weight off the name plate. Maybe I confused it with the GVWR...?

I have a Logan Performer 100X two horse GN slant load. It is not a LQ. I remember looking at the nameplate part and only seeing 7000 lbs so that is what I thought the weight was. Where else would I find it?

I did find out from the dealer that the towing capacity for the truck I looked at is 9500.
Thank you so much for helping me figure this all out.

If you got 7,000 pounds from the nameplate, I'll bet dollars to a doughnut that number is the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. That means the maximum loaded trailer weight Logan designed for. Because there are too many options, The only true trailer weight is obtained at a certified scale. It'll cost you under $10 to drive over a scale at the local truck stop.

You should be well within the truck's capabilities.

LMTB ... Since this is a used truck, check the tires. It came with load range "E" tires. If the tires on it say LOAD RANGE "D" or less (C, or B... Plan on buying new tires. The GN trailer will put 20% - 30% of the total trailer weight on the hitch. Throw a few bales of hay and 1/2 cord of firewood or a water tank... The "D" tires will be over loaded.

HP,

You have been a fantastic resource, thank you so much. I have inquired about the tires and am now curious to hear back.

I don't have a truck scale near me, so no actual weighing. You were right, I was using the GVWR.

I can't believe I thought the trailer itself weighed 7000 lbs...ugh!

I appreciate your support. Smiler
