This is when the power steering has reached the limit of travel ? Right?
There are two explanations. 1: You're hearing the hydraulic pressure relief valve venting 2: You're hearing the belt driving the power steering pump slipping. This seems likely since you've said "schreeching"

Second thought.... on an 83 vintage truck... the belts are old too... replace them all as a preventive meaure. You might have to take a couple of belts off to replace the PS pump belt. If so, half the labor and trouble is already done in replacing the belts. New V-belts are relatively cheap insurance
