A good friend recently advised me that Ford 7.3 diesels from 1999 - early 2003 are good bets in a used Ford powerstroke. Stay away from 2003 and 2004 6.0-liter Fords. I cannot afford newer than that. So, would you concur with this advice, generally speaking?

Any year of the 7.3 would be fine. Ford changed some things in 99 that gave the engine more power. Any of the 99-03 7.3's shoul be fine!

Actually, during 2003, Ford changed from the 7.3-liter to 6.0-liter engine. From what I can find out, that engine had a great many problems for too many folks to be a good risk in a used vehicle. Be sure to run a CarFax report and an OASIS report on any truck you are interested in. A Ford dealer can run the OASIS report for you if you have the VIN. You can run the CarFax online for a few bucks. Good luck!

The early 03's still had the 7.3. Not all of the 6 liters are bad but I wouldn't own one seeing the amount of repairs that I've seen.
