Hi. I have a 2007 Ford 350, 4x4, long box, gas, supercab, XLT,V8, 5.4 litre engine. I am considering buying either a pull-behind or a 5th wheel trailer and I'm totally ignorant of the advantages of one style over the other. Can anyone suggest where I can go to find reference material as to each style's advantages and disadvantages? Or can any of you take the time to give me your opinion(s)? Thanks. George

Have no doubt of where I stand on your question. Fifth wheel or gooseneck all the way. I pulled a BP horse trailer once. I didn't like it one bit. The sway was enough to convince me.

Since you already have a truck, with a long bed no less! I highly recommend the 5th wheel. The reasons are: Better towing stability. Better turning radius for equal trailer length. Better truck driving control ( the trailer weight is distributed between both axles.) Some folks say a 5th wheel is easier to back too.

I can't speak to RV's. Simply remember in your choice the two ratings of your truck.
Do not exceed either... CGVWR. Combined gross vehicle weight rating. This is the total loaded weight of the truck and trailer.
AND ... Rear axle rating. The larger RV's can over load the rear axle. Helper springs and such don't increase the trucks wheel bearing, tires, shock, etc...

Great points. I'll have to talk to the dealer to determine the rear axle ratio as nothing I have tells me. There's a 2000 lb difference in rating between the two choices which is significant I think. I bought the truck for reasons other than using it to pull a RV. Once again, thanks for the information. George

George... I meant rear axle "weight" rating. The rear axle ratio influences the pulling ability vs fuel use. It's built into the CGVWR

You didn't say if your F350 is a dually or a single wheel rear truck. A f-350 single wheel rear axle is nothing more than a tarted up 3/4 ton truck.

You're right, it's nothing more than a tarted-up 3/4. In this country, you have to pay a luxury tax if you buy a 3/4 but no luxury tax if you buy a 1 ton. The cost comes out to be close to even so go figure! In my case, it's a single axle so whenever I have a choice to make I'll use the lowest values to work with. That should be the safest way to go.
