Hi, I am very uneducated in this department and need some help. I found a fifth wheel that I want 1998 Jayco 34'. My husband is concerned because of the kingpin being straight down, not slanted like he has seen. We also have a Ford 4x4 short bed truck. We have a cranberry farm so we really need the truck flat and ready to be fully used when we are not using the fifth wheel. Can anyone tell me exactly what to buy and have installed on the truck and fifth wheel?
B+W and others have hitches that bolt below the bed of your truck. The only hole in the bed is for the hitch and the safety chains. While most hitches are for a gooseneck, there are converters for the fifth wheel. When not towing the hitch removes and the bed of the truck is flat and unobstructed. ( you might have to put something over the hitch to keep a load of berries from clogging the hitch)
Berrygrower... Also ... check the nose of your trailer. With a short bed, you might have problems with the trailer hitting the truck cab when making a tight turn. This is a serious consideration for that vertical kingpin set-up.
