I plan to buy a 5th wheel toy hauler and a truck, and the RV I am looking at is 13,615# dry with 18,000# GVWR. What kind of truck do I need to buy in order to haul this thing safely? The RV dealer tells me that a 3/4 ton diesel is fine--but the truck literature is showing limits of 15,000#. I plan to be hauling 1,400# of motorcycles and by my calculation, that doesn't leave room for anything else.

What do you suggest?

There are two points to consider.
1) The combined gross weight rating of the truck. Subtract the LOADED weight of the truck from the CGWR and that's your max trailer weight.

2) the hitch weight of the loaded trailer. This is the load the trialer will place on the truck. There is only one differance between a 3/4 ton truck and a 1 ton truck ... The dual wheels. The dually is needed for the heavy 5th'er trailers. Air bags and helper springs don't do anything for overloaded tires.

Didn't answer your question in the previous post ... IF you're going to load the trailer up to the 18,000# , you're going to need a class 4 or class 5 truck. The dry weight plus 1400# is about the CGVWR limit (22,000) for a class 2 or 3 truck.

Also check your driver's license. You may need a different class of license in your state since the trailer is over 10,000 # GVWR
