Hi-
I have an 87 2wd 6cyl. automatic Custom Deluxe truck w/ only 38000 miles on it. I need to be able to tow at least at total weight 4000 pounds of horse trailer & horse with it. With electric trailer braking, etc is that safe? Should I add stabilizer bars and a transmission cooler?
My manual doesn't say what the towing capacity for this truck is and Chevrolet doesn't seem to be able to find the info.
Thanks so much for any help!!!!

If yours is a Votec 4.3L V-6, it is a good engine with great gas mileage. But that truck has a tendency to have a small radiator and towing can overheat it. I've towed 4000# with a simaler truck, 91, and it did well. But it overheated too. It definitly needs an external transmission cooler and see if you can get a better radiator, like a 4 row. I think you have just 2 core rows now. That may not cost much from a junk yard. And I would use a Weight Distributing Hitch also and certainly a trailer brake controller.
