We just got new trailer tires and one was low on air pressure. I inflated them to 32 like I have always done my cars.

I just saw a Cimmaron Trailer thingy and I think the announcer said that trailer tires should be 80 pounds.

Is that right?

Holy Moly ... BIgDaddyRoach,

Trailer tires are a different breed than your car tires. Black, round and full of air are the only similarities.

Air pressure, not the tire, supports the load. While 32PSI may be correct, I doubt it. You have the same chance at winning the lottery as 32 PSI being correct.

I inflate my trailer tires to the max pressure on the tire side wall. The reasoning is to:
Maximize the load carrying capacity.
Keep the tires from rolling off the rims when turning sharply. (A GN trailer can be turned in its length. Hard on the tires and axles but can be done.)
Decrease rolling resistance.
Increase tire tread wear.

Here's a link from a tire manufacturer that recommends max pressure.

If you go to www.carlisletire.com They have several other articles on trailer tires.

Hosspuller, I didn't say that 32 was correct. I said that i put 32 in because that is what I do with my cars. After seeing that clip on RFD TV I went out and checked my tires. Sure enough they say 75 lbs.

WHen I saw the clip it was night outside so I posted that ad before I could check the tires.

I'm glad that I saw that clip from Cimmaron trailers. They, like yourself, pointed out that I was about to cause some big problems.

I am wondering if my mileage might improve.

Thanks

One more thing Hosspuller, thanks for the web site. Great information.

We recently had these tires installed by a very large auto repair center. Not long after we got the new tires one was really low and when I went to fill them up the other 3 tires were only at 28 lbs.

I will be calling them in the morning to inform them of the difference between cars and trailers.

Thanks again.
