I am new to towing gooseneck trailers and would appreciate any advice.
I have a 2006 Chevy 2500 HD duramax diesel short bed (6.5') truck and am considering buying a 3 horse 8-12'SW LQ gooseneck trailer. Will my truck work with this kind of trailer? Stats say 7'6" tall, 7' wide, 8' gooseneck. Will I need some kind of extender for the hitch? Any suggestions on what kind of trailer would work well with this truck? Also will I need extended mirrors?
Thanks!

Hi, did you get the towing mirrors? Those will pull out. I just pulled a 6 horse Cimarron with a truck just like your's yesterday up through I-70 at 11,000 ft threw Eisenhower tunnel with a 7% grade. I love the Allison auto tranny grade shifting and now with a 6-speed and manual shifting with the toggle switch on the shifter is great. Your truck is rated around 15,000 # towing, but with horses take 15% off that. Is the trailer aluminum? Find out the empty weight of the trailer and add 1500#'s for each horse with hay, water and tack and see if the loaded weight is under 13,000#'s and then you should be fine.

Thanks for the information. I don't have the towing mirrors, but I assume that they can be added? I've read about some people having trouble with towing goosenecks with their short bed trucks, should I expect any trouble with this truck? I spoke with someone at a trailer dealership and they said no problem, just make sure you get a gooseneck with tapered sides.
Someone also told me that the Chevy diesel has trouble with overheating-I live in AZ so this is of particular interest to me. Is there something that can be done/added to help prevent this problem (if it is even a problem at allSmiler
Thanks again!

Modern diesels have large radiators. I haven't seen where Chevy has any different cooling problems than Ford or Dodge. You can buy aftermarket electric fans it it becomes a problem. Back your truck at 90 degrees under a few trailers to your ball and see how much room is between the trailer nose and truck cab. The new narrower nose horse tralers will taper a foot. So if the trailer is 7' wide, the nose face will be 6'.
