I have a 2007 Duramax 4X4 truck, and an older ('92) gooseneck Hart trailer. I have been hauling the trailer with my '88 Chevy, 2-wheel drive 2500 - now I'm preparing to install the ball in the Duramax to haul the same trailer. However, my father just got a new truck - same truck, same size, and it is too high for his Sundowner gooseneck horse trailer - he has already put dents in the back corners of his bed going over humps in the road and turning around on uneven ground. My trailer is quite a bit lower than his, I'm sure my truck isn't going to fit under it well enough to avoid damage. Any solution to fitting the new truck to the old trailer, or do I have to buy a new trailer to fit the new truck?
Hello ... There are two solutions... Lower the truck or raise the trailer. Some trucks can be lowered by removing a spring perch. Others will need a lowering kit.
For the trailer: the axles can be blocked or replaced. Either option to the trailer makes the step up larger. If your trailer already has a ramp, you're in a good place.
Be aware that using a trailer with torsion axles significantly nose high puts a lot of weight on the rear axle. The torsion axles don't share the load well. (reason why Dexter doesn't recommend triples)

Thanks - sounds like I'll need to get a new trailer. Don't want to lower my truck, and anyway it's a chevy - much lower already than the comparable Dodge or Ford trucks - how do they fit those trucks under a gooseneck trailer if the chevy won't fit? My old truck fit perfectly but it was 2 wheel drive and so already lower, and chevy so already lower than ford or dodge in the first place. Gah. I'll look into ways to raise the trailer but can't see it happening if my dad's already-taller trailer is still hitting his truck. How frustrating. Thanks -
The new trailer have a taller bulkhead and a taller roof to maintain the headroom in the bunk area. That's a reason the trailers are going to 7 1/2 feet or more.
