This may seem like a silly question, but does one need to grease the ball hitch for a bumper pull? If so, how often and what is the best way to apply it? My husband bought me some "ball hitch grease" from Lowes.
Thanks! |

The "ball" needs to be greased before hitching the trailer. Otherwise the metal of the ball and the metal of the hitch will rub each other with great pressure and wear themselves out. It takes a lot of movement and time to do this, but it will happen. A ball hitch cover will do wonders toward keeping your best jeans from the rag bag. Also, the cover will let you keep the ball well greased and clean when not in use.

Hosspuller, you are a wealth of information! Someone had also told me I needed to be greasing my ball hitch, but other than helping to prevent it's rusting, I wasn't sure why.. I'd just spray it with WD 40 from time to time.. I was pretty sure that wasn't what they meant, but didn't know what else to do..

RAR .. Thanks for the kind word ...
I'm full of information because of the mistakes I've made. (oops!) I try to learn from them... One doesn't have to buy "special" trailer ball grease. It's marketed as a white grease or non staining... Well, after a few miles the grease collects road grime and such. Then it stains your best jeans at the knee, just like any other grease. LOL ... Just about any grease will do. A grease marked EP (extreme pressure) is optimum for the trailer ball. |
