I am in the process of buying my first truck in order to haul my horse around. I am looking at a 2006 GMC 1500 5.3L V8 w/towing package. My trailer weighs 3300 lbs empty. I know that if the trailer is loaded with 2 horses and tack, it could weight up to 6000 lbs (at most). The dealer's towing guides say that this will not be a problem for this vehicle, but will this truck really be able to take that much weight? Does the rear axle ratio (3.23 vs 3.73) make much of a difference?

I can't afford to get a diesel or 3/4 ton.

P.S. I am planning on getting a weight-distribution hitch.

Big difference in those axle ratios. You want the 3.73 at least. The 6.0L would be better and in a 2500 you could be the 4.10 axle and have more towing power. There's not that much difference in price between a 1500 and 2500 unless you go diesel. You can tow 6000#'s with the 5.3L, it's a fast engine but not the torque of a 6.0L. My rule of thumb for towing horses with their movement and high center of gravity is to deduct 15% from what the trucks towing capacity is. It's dramaticly different hauling live animals verses dead weight as in a travel trailer.

Thanks for the help!! The truck dealers seem to only be able to spew back what is written in their marketing materials.

I'm new to the website and just saw your post. I've owned several pickup trucks and towed 2 and 4 horse trailers. I bought a used Ford Super Duty F-250 for the built in break controller and 6L Diesel engine and LOVE it.

Have you looked at the New F-150 Fords? Everyone seems to have an opinion Chevy v. Ford, but you ought to see a Comparison that was done of ALL the top trucks including Toyota, Nissan, etc. Ford really builds a great truck for towing.

Good luck!
