Joseph ...
What kind of trailer are you trying to tow?
Will you be in the mountains or flatlands?

The only true information you'll get is from GM's towing guide for 1989. I did a quick internet search, but wasn't able to find a towing guide for model year 1989. It'll have the maximum weights for 5th wheel towing and bumper pull towing. Be aware that GM has required a WD hitch on all BP trailers over 5,000 pounds since at least 2001. (when I bought my latest GM truck)

i have seached for 89 gmc towing guide on internet and could not find anything .

i want to pull a pull behinde travel trailer self contained.
i am basiccly going to be living and pulling for a year.
i want the most SAFE triler i can pull. lenght.

i have a reese hitch 10,000 max trailer weight
1000 tongue weight max.
BUT
it has 5000 distributed weight and 500 tongue weight on same sticker.
not sure how to read this.

glovebook has a factory sticker for slide in camper it says cargo weight rating #1187.

on the vin sticker on door this is what it reads
gvwr 5600/2540
gawr front 2950/1330
gvwr rear 3404/1544

i want to pull a double axile with brakes
i have just installed reese pilot brake and trailer wiring coupler.

i will use a equilizer bar and a sway bar

i will be mostly flat to small hills
tennessee
miss florida.

so i want to know the maxium lenght to safly pull.
i want to know the maxium dry weight and estimated total weight to pull.

also the max tounge weight .

i do have the short wheeel plain 2 door stepside bed.
v8 auto STRONG moter.
ilove my little truck and dont want to have to buy a bigger truck.

Your question is like asking the strength of a chain. The weakest link is the strength of the chain. In your case the weakest componet is the max trailer your truck will tow. The hitch label is telling you Its maximum trailer weight is 10,000. The max tongue weight is 500# or 5000 # if using a WD hitch (like the Equilizer)

glovebook has a factory sticker for slide in camper it says cargo weight rating #1187.

This is saying your truck can carry 1187# max. IF the trailer tongue weight is 500# you can carry an additional 687# in the truck. This means passengers and their luggage...

gvwr 5600/2540
gawr front 2950/1330

First number is Pounds, second is Kilos. Fully loaded your truck will weigh 2540 kilos

so i want to know the maxium lenght to safly pull. Almost a irrelevant question. but since you have a short bed truck you don't want a very long trailer for road stability reasons. i want to know the maxium dry weight and estimated total weight to pull.Look in the manual for a GCVWR number. This is the maximum Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating. Subtract the loaded weight of your truck (5600# max), this is your max trailer weight
