Hi, I have a 2000 Toyota Landcruiser, supposed to easily tow 6500 lbs. I've rented a Sooner two horse bp with dressing room, it did fine.
I just got deliver on a new Featherlite 9407 two horse straight load with a dressing room, it weighs I think 2200 lbs. My dealer says I do not need a WDH. I have one 15 hand quarter horse, will often pull him and another horse.
Does anyone have an opinion on this? I'm afraid if I go to a hitch place they'll say of course you need one. My dealer is very reputable and doesn't think I need one.
At your weight (just under 5000 pounds) a WDH is in a grey area. The major American truck builders either require or suggest a WDH if thge trailer load is 5000+
In my opinion: A WDH is like a seat belt. You may ride fine without one. But, in an evasive manuever or a pucker moment, a WDH or seat belt adds to the margin of control and safety. It'll be too late to get a WDH or buckle the seat belt when you really need it.
Remember, you may control your vehicle, but you have none over other drivers or road conditions.

Newbie, I've been towing for 20 years, 2H BP and small travel trailer, and I will NEVER tow ANY trailer ANY distance without a WD hitch (properly adjusted)! That stomach-sinking, fishtailing feeling when a semi passes close or a cross-wind hits the trailer? Never again -- I have enough grey hair!
