I have an '08 Toyota Tundra with a tow package. Tow capacity is 10,300 and payload is ~1,600.
I am horse trailer shopping - 2 horse trailer but I will only haul one horse. He's a 16.3 hand Friesian gelding and weighs 1,300-1,400 lbs. Calm horse - good traveller. I'm looking at a Featherlite 2H GN with an empty weight of 3,400 lbs and GTW of 7,000. The trailer salesman assures me that the tongue weight of this trailer (Model 9608) is ~ 15% of the total trailer weight. With this tongue weight % and one horse plus gear (I'm figuring 2,000lbs load to allow for safety factor) and 2 people in the truck I think I'll be OK. Truck load of people (2x165 + 75 misc) of ~ 400 lbs and tongue weight (.15 x 5,400)810 lbs for total weight in the truck of 1,210. BUT -- most towing guides say that the tongue weight of a GN is ~ 20% of the trailer weight and that would be cutting it too close I think. The trailer is built so that the horses stand right over the trailer axles so intuitively it makes sense that the tongue weight % is more in the zone of a BP than a larger GN. What do you think? |

I agree that you will be very marginal in carrying capacity. Since the model 9608 is a straight load, the horse position is moot. (tho you'll want to load him on the driver's side, road crown and all...) Remember the hitch as installed in the truck alone will weigh about 100 pounds. The dressing room is large compared to a similar BP trailer. Just don't bring the filled 100 gallon water tank.

Gotit. No water tank.
I want to haul to clinics and local shows. No camping excursions. So am willing to trade off truck carrying capacity for greater stability and less sway. |
