Hi, Just found and registered to this great forum. My question is related to electric breaks. I do not yet have the break controller installed on my Dodge Ram. Today I bought my first two horse bumper pull trailer. When I connected the 6-way round trailer connector to my 7-way connector (throught an adapter) the trailer breaks would engage. I disconnected the blue wire inside the adapter thinking this would not allow the breaks to engage. But it did not work. I am getting the controller this week but thought I was puzzled by this and was searching for an answer. Thanks.

There are two adapters, RV and horse trailer. The brake and ground wires are reversed. But you want to just hook up a good brake controller.

Thanks for the reply MrTruck!
I rec'd my new Controller today (Tekonsha Prodigy) and would like to confirm the hookup with you. I have the Dodge Ram harness (Blue female with Green (Gnd), Red/White (+12V), Blue (12Gauge ID as Trailer Brakes), Blue/White (Brake Sense Input). My question: Red wire from the Prodigy harness >> to the Blue/White Vehicle sense Blue (12 Gauge Brake) from Prodigy >> to the Blue (12 Gauge Trailer Brake). Correct? Sorry for the basic questions but I just wasn't sure. Thanks again, Steven |

Does your Ram have the factory tow package? If so then just plug it in. Other wise the instructions with the controller are good. I'm on my way to the Detroit Auto Show to look at hte 2007 trucks and SUV's. I'd have to look it up, but Prodigy has good instructions and website. I'll have to remember to put the trailer wire diagram on the website, that would be good.

Have fun at the show...sounds interesting.
I got it hooked up and ready for a test run. The prodigy display after connection (as noted above) is normal per the directions. I do have the tow package on the RAM but the Dodge supplied harness had the connector only on one end to mate with the connector under the dash. Same with the prodigy supplied standard harness. So I had to make sure I connected the two harness correctly. Based on the correct display I am confident I did. I will update after the test run. The other unknown was the 7-pin (fron the Ram) to Horse Trailer (6-pin) adapter. I reveresed the Brake and Gnd as you noted above. Wish me luck! -Steven |

Update: I have good news and then not so good news. After a successful test run by the book on setting the power (have it set at 3.2) and boost (b1) I was going on a 4 mile loop. Half way though it I lost power to the unit. Blown 40Amp break fuse. Replaced it and the display is normal. Turning the ingition on it blows immediately. I am at a loss for what is going on now. Any ideas?

Update #2
It is something on the trailer side as I replaced the fuse, disconnected the trailer and everything works fine on the truck side (power to the controller with normal display after starting the truck). Can electric breaks "heat up"? One more note: This is a used trailer but I was told (and also witnessed) the trailer being pulled by the man I bought it from with no problems. I will work on it again tomorrow. Thanks, Steven |

You can check the amps going to each brake magnet and see if they are all close. Alot of trailer problems come from bad grounds. Generally from the brake controller 4 wires, blue is brake, battery is black, red is stoplight, white ground, there should be a wire diagram with the controller

I found the short - it was in the 6-way round connector (trailer side). I bought a replacement today and have everything going now but the running lights (they were working previously). One thing that is confusing me as I only have 4 wires on the trailer (White - Gnd, Black - Brakes, Green - Drver side turn/brake), Red - Pass side turn/brake).
My question -- where do I hook the running light wire from the two vehicle to? Thanks for the help. |

New Update (sorry for all of the questions).
I mis-spoke about the wire count. I have 5 wires. However, two are white and I thought one was a redundant ground as one white wire is tied directly to the chassis under the tongue and the other white wires runs from what I can tell througout the trailer. Today I will take the one running throughout and disconnect it and see if this one is for the running lights. So in summary I have: One black - +12V for brakes One green - drver side turn/brake lights One red - pass side turn/brake lights one white - tie directly to chassis under tounge One more white 0 - running throughout trailer. |

Got it!!
The "extra" white wire was for the running lights. Seems odd to have two white wires but that is how it it. So now I have everything going with no problem. Wow...trailer wiring sure is interesting. |
