So I just purchased a used 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 2WD 5.7L Hemi V-8. This is my only vehicle and while it was not purchased specifically as a towing vehicle I am wondering what I can safely tow with it.
From my online research it looks like it should have a factory installed class IV receiver and a 3.73:1 axle ratio. I can't find a sticker on the receiver, but it has 7 pin wiring and looks to be bolted to the frame. Is this actually a class IV or how can I tell? Assuming that it is a class IV, the vehicle is rated (with this engine) to haul up to 7400lbs. The vehicle's Gross Weight is 6010 lbs, but I can't seem to find a combined gross weight. My biggest concern is the 109.5" wheelbase. So can I safely tow a 2horse BP with this vehicle? If so, what type of trailer would you recommend for it? BTW, I show reining horses so they aren't too big (around 15hands/1000lbs). |

Hello again ... With a 7400 pound rating you can safely tow a 2 H BP trailer. You'll need two addition things though.
1) a WD hitch. With a short wheelbase and a light vehicle, WDH will balance the trailer's tongue weight on the Jeep's tires. You especially want the steering tires to have weight and traction for control. 2) A Towing attitude on your mind at all times. You'll have a vehicle combination that'll be twice the normal weight and twice the length. It doesn't stop, turn or respond as you're used to. There always will be ignorant and careless drivers around you. |
