Hi,
I would love some input on this problem. I recently bought a Kingston 2 horse straight load bumper pull, aluminum skin, steel frame trailer. I bought it used, and then had a reputable trailer pro do extensive rehab work on it. I do not have a truck yet. A friend has been hauling it for me using a Ram 1500 short bed pick-up. Locally the trailer has been fine. When we had it one the highway, once with bad weather and once without, there was significant sway. We had two 1000-1100 lb horses. The horses also seemed to be fighting despite having loads of hay. She has a Class III hitch, no Weight distribution, no sway bars. She feels that the sway is due to a combination of needing new shocks and the horses fighting. I have not yet purchased a truck, but I plan to get a 2500. Will this help relieve the sway issue? Should I get a WDH? Riding behind a swaying trailer is really scarey. I bought a Kingston because I have followed lots of trailers, and these always seemed to ride best. Should I contact the guy who did the rehab work or is this probably a truck-related (or hitch-related problem)? Trailer guy is about an hour away so not too easy to access. Thanks for your input! |

Could be alot of things, but generally a good wdh with sway control would be good. A heavy duty 3/4 ton will move less from the trailer and may not need wdh if the receiver hitch is class 4 or 5 and you are at the weight carring limit that may only be 5000#'s, where the weight distributing limit may be 10,000 #'s. Overload springs and wdh will greatly help a 1/2 ton truck. Horses have that high center of gravity and can move a trailer aroung. I highly recommend using a wdh with a bumper pull trailer.
