Hello,
I just purchased a brand new 2 horse Featherlite box stall trailer. It is a stock/combo steel/aluminum that is 3175lb total weight. It is two box stalls 7ft tall, 6'8 wide, and 16ft long. I currently have 2004 Trail Blazer that I was puling Bison 2 horse trailer with one horse only. Now I have two horses that are about 1300lb each that I am going to trailer together but not often. I have been towing with Trail Blazer for 5 years (it's my 2nd one) and absolutely loved it and had no issues towing. It felt light and even with my horse liking to move around handled really well. Now I am a little concerned with the total weight and two horses and pulling with this SUV. I called Chevy and they told me that I have 3.42 axles and the towing capacity is 6100lbs. I don't have weight distribution and never did have it. The one thing I have noticed when I was pulling this trailer home it felt the same as if I was pulling my 2400lb Bison with a 1300lb horse and the trailer was empty. That made me think if I will be ok towing two horses or even one in this trailer. I want to make sure it's safe for me to tow my babies and I don't want to put anyone in danger. For the past week I have been researching SUV's as well as Trucks. I really hate pickup trucks and am trying to stay away form them. I really never will need a pickup truck and I cannot afford to have two cars so SUV is my first choice. I have been looking at 2006 Dodge Durango SLT with V8 HAMI engine that will tow 8900# and I was also looking at Avalanche which is the only pickup truck I will go with as it's more like an SUV and looks nice. My question is what should I do? Are there any other SUV's that I should look at or is Dodge Durango and/or Chevy Avalanche is a decent choice? I really would appreciate any advice I can get. Sincerely, Regina |

For a SUV, the Durango and Avalance should work fine for a small bumper pull. Be sure to use a weight distributing hitch as most 1/2 ton SUV's now are either independent rear suspension or rear coil springs or both. Rear leaf suspension that pickup trucks have are more stable with a trailer. So the WDH is important.
