I'm looking for a 3 horse slant load gooseneck trailer. I'm going to be hauling with a Toyota Tundra 5.7. I have quarter horses, not bigger than 15.2 and 1100 lbs. I've never bought a trailer before... and want to buy used to save $. Can anyone recommend a brand of trailer that you love, and/or a trailer dealership that sells used on the east coast between VT and FL? Thanks!

Hi Lindsey .. Before you actually purchase a trailer, look at what your truck can handle.
You'll need to know the weight the truck can handle in the bed. A GN will put about 25% of the trailer weight into the truck through the hitch. You'll want to be sure the tires, springs, suspension, etc can take it. |

Sounds like we are looking for the same thing. Let me know what info you find. I have seen some used Exiss and Bison trailers that seem to fit what I need but haven't any info on the brands.

Thanks for all the info. I'm looking at a Hart trailer... not a brand I've seen much, but they seem to be nice. Anyone have experience with them?

The Hart Trailers I've looked at, had mangers. I didn't want mangers so I didn't look in depth at them. I've seen many Harts in my area so they do fill a need.
Here's a link to a write -up on them >> http://www.mrtrailer.com/hart.htm |

I ended up going with a 1994 Hart 3 horse slant load. I haven't had a chance to haul with it... we're still hip deep in snow here in VT... but it certainly seems to be a solid trailer. I'm hauling to Wyoming with it in a few months. That will be the test I guess!

For a 14 year old trailer on a long trip, like yours.... there are three tasks I would get done before leaving.
1... Check the tires and fill to max pressure on the sidewall 2... Have the brakes checked & trailer wheel bearings repacked, both inner and outer if you don't know their condition 3... Sign up for USrider Forget AAA and others if you're hauling horses. Only USrider will help if you have a trailer of horses. Ask and I'll tell you my experience with USrider. |

Thanks for the info. I hadn't heard of USrider before. I checked out their web site, and it looks like a neat program. I'd love to hear about your experience with them.

We have been rescued by USRider three times over the past year. Wife is the holder of the membership. The coverage is like an auto club it covers the person. One can get associate memberships but wife is the primary horse person.
1.. Wife's van died at a gas station. Would not start. She called UR and they sent a flatbed to pick it up and take it to dealer. First good experience... 2. We locked both sets of keys in the truck, in our driveway, at home. Called UR and they sent a locksmith. Second good experience... 3. We were camping in a remote part of Virginia. I got the truck and trailer stuck. The truck was off the road and the trailer jack-knifed on the verge of hanging up on the road edge. It was an ugly situation. Any further attempts at moving the truck on its own would mean bent sheet metal. We called UR. They Did NOT have a contracted service provider in the area. With us giving UR a bit of local knowledge and the phone number from the local phone book, UR immediately contacted the local heavy hauling company. UR then sent them out to rescue us. This is the part where UR stands above all others. First question the call responder asked "Are you and the horses safe? " UR is expecting you to have horses and a rig. Any other road service like AAA will NOT get involved with a horse trailer or horses. UR is ready to send help AND do what ever is needed. That meant contacting a completely unknown towing service to help us. (Days later, I tested AAA with the description of the situation I had. They kept telling me to unhitch the trailer before they could send help. Fat Chance! If I didn't have the trailer attached, I wouldn't need help) The picture is the tow truck and my rescued rig. As long as We trailer horses , UR is standard equipment for us. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Hosspuller, safe.JPG (66 KB, 13 downloads) Big a$$ tow truck |
