I have a small 2 horse trailer and I tow 1 horse very rarely. I am in the market for a 4 wheel or all wheel drive suv that will get decent gas mileage but will tow the horse and trailer when I need it. The horse and trailer weight is 2700 lbs (with tack). I have to commute 30 miles per day so gas mileage is a major factor at this point due to high gas prices. Will an suv equipped with the factory tow package designed to tow 3500 lbs work for what I need? I am looking at the smaller suvs - Saturn vue, jeep liberty or new rav4 equipped with tow prep package. What do you think?

I think the Liberty is too short of wheelbase, the Saturn and Rav4 are front wheel drive and doubt you'd want to tow over 2000#'s. Go to Enterprise or even Home Depot and rent a truck when you tow the trailer. We all want a tow vehicle that gets great mileage. The VW Toureg with a V-10 diesel can get 23 mpg and will tow your trailer. But the right SUV is $70K. The diesel in the Liberty has a lot of turbo lag and wouldn't tow with it. Some of the mid size SUV's will get 20 mpg, like Explorer, Trailblazer, Durango. So for a trailer I go up one size in SUV.
