I have a 2005 Sport Trac 2WD, which is sutied to tow anything up to 5260 lbs. I believe it has a tounge weight of around 500 lbs, but I could be wrong.I have not purchased a horse trailer, or a horse yet for that matter, but plan on using my Sport Trac to tow them with.
I was told by a horsey-person friend that my truck could NOT be used to safely tow a horse and a small trailer, and by a horse I mean one that is around 1100-1400 lbs. She said it wasn't an issue of towing the loaded trailer, but a possible problem with breaking, as my small truck could not bring the trailer to a safe stop, because it might cause it to jack knife. I would only be towing the 1 horse and basic riding tack/supplies. I would like the trailer to include a small tack room, no dressing room needed. I wanted to know if this information was incorrect, and if so, what type of trailer would be the BEST to use for my situation. I know they are making newer, lighter trailers with a lighter tongue weight, but I read somewhere that the axle placement unevenly distributes the weight of the horse, increasing the risk of fish tailing. Any help or reccommendations would be greatly appreciated!!!! |

A light trailer and good trailer brake controller should work with one horse. Look for a total loaded trailer weight of 4500#'s. Sport-Trac in your year shares frame and drivetrain with the Explorer. Thousands of folks two small horse trailers with Explorers. A Brenderup trailer would be good.
